The 40k Campaign Challenge - March

Back to February

Player - mr te'atime'

This month I'm going to paint up my Eldar Falcon - a weapon/transport grav tank. It is always good to have at least one as not only are they an excellent tank hunter, but they can also carry the creme de la creme of tank hunters, the fire dragons, (which will probably be the next unit I paint).

I got some practice on the tank colour scheme thanks to the weapons platform in my guardian squad and will follow the same process, but with more detailing and a nice free hand design, hopefully.

I'm very happy with the way painting went this week, and am over the moon with my falcon, it turned out just as I'd hoped it would.

Player - Lurkus Spleen

Right on to my second choice (March). I’ve decided to go for one of my three Leman Russ battle tanks.

Player - Dread Lord

I had planned to do my HQ choice this month but the shop was out of stock. I've plumped instead for some Genestealers. I've got 2 boxes plus another 7 from mr. te'atime' but I'm only doing 17 of the 23 this month. The others will appear as Ymgarl Genestealers later in the series.

I plan to give these 17 the adrenal gland up-grade because the idea of furious charge with rending appeals to me. Others may scoff at this waste of points but I will simple absorb their bio mass and move on!

Next up will be some Wolf-guard or Grey-Hunters. I haven't quite decided yet, but whichever way they will be heavily converted. If this unit works out it will define the theme for my army. If it dosen't it will back to the drawing board!

Pretty happy with the way these Grey Hunters have turned out. I managed to reach new levels of painting geekdom in putting them together :) I am too ashamed to reveal all of the little details and fuss I put in, but you might spot some of it if you look closely.

Player - Selket

This month I'm doing basically the same thing again but with a Chimera instead of the Command Squad.

Player - Corrode

Next up is a Tactical Squad, because I have the models and you can almost always find a use for them in a Marine army. There's actually two special weapons in the picture; I have an extra Death Company body covered in the right iconography so I'm going to give him a plasma cannon and run plasma/plasma. Let's hope I can figure out a good red.

The new 'dex is floating around in stores now, and the oh-so-gorgeous models are available for viewing on-line. All I can say is that I picked a good time to redo the old Sons of Sanguinius! I've already ordered Lemartes, a box of Sanguinary Guard (guess what my choice for April is!) and a Codex. Anything else will just have to wait until student loans come in.

I'm still not quite sure where to go with the army, but seeing how nice the new models are I've decided on a few basic things:

Sanguinary Guard must be included. It doesn't matter that they cost the same as Terminators, have no invulnerable, and will get chewed up if a Vindicator so much as sneezes in their direction. They're way too cool not to have, especially with those fancy power swords of theirs.

Assault Squads in Razorbacks are in. Heavy weapons are going to be hard to come by in this list, so having a Troops choice which can fire off lascannons on the move is a definite necessity (even if Fast Razorbacks are going to be super-expensive!). On top of that they can form a nice wall for my expensive jump troops to hide behind, preferably whilst blasting away some of the threats to said expensive jump troops.

Sanguinary Priests are a yes, with the 6” Feel No Pain/Furious Charge bubble. Probably a squad of Devastators to sit at the back and plink away with missile launchers, too. Conversely, Mephiston is out; as awesome as the model is, the fact he's going to be running around on his own means that he's likely going to be a Land-Raider-expensive way to throw away points as every lascannon in the vicinity hits him in the face.

The bigger question at the moment is what to do with the rest. I fancy having Lemartes, since the model is so nice and I want Death Company, but that's 150pts of character along with his jump-packing retinue and I still need an HQ choice – I'm tempted to go with Astorath the Grim and have a properly chaplain heavy force of Angels, perfect for the avenging-fiery-wrath angle! I also fancy some Baal Predators but it's all starting to add up (both points- and cash-wise!) so we'll have to see come April.

Painting wise I've settled on a fairly simple scheme, which I've been using to do the red on my Crimson Fists for a while now. Undercoat black, basecoat Dark Flesh, wash Badab Black, drybrush Mechrite Red and then Blood Red, wash Baal Red. The Crimson Fists usually skip the Blood Red step, but I think the Angels really benefit from the bright-red look. I've tried this out already on a Techmarine crewing a Vindicator and it comes out rather nicely. The gold-armoured stuff has been similarly tested, going Tin Bitz - drybrush Shining Gold - drybrush Burnished Gold - Badab Black wash. Hopefully this'll help me get the army going fairly quickly, and more to the point let me keep up with the monthly vow, whilst still looking good.

This month's a bit of a write-off to be honest - a miserable effort saw me complete only a single model, and he's a bit crap (yellow on the helmet is godawful, for example). I learned some stuff from him, but if but if anyone has advice on painting bright reds or mid-yellows I'd be very appreciative.

Player - Frogboy

After struggling to complete one dreadnought in time for last month's deadline and switching from a scratch built model to a GW box set special half way through (due to technical difficulties), this month I've decided to make things a little easier, as this is the first army i will attempt to complete, the plan for this month is to finish off a unit of Khorne Berzerkers some of which have been roughly painted already.

Also I plan to paint up a Rhino APC to hurry my jolly red skull takers into the heat of battle. If I'm able to get my hands on any more Bezerkers before the month is up i will endeavor to paint them too, effectively creating two units, after all one can never have two many Bezerkers...."BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD"

Finished

Player - Dev-Nul

This month I have chosen to start on the troop choice which is the Raider Squad. 10 warriors and a Raider for rapid deployment.
