Basing of models

With the hobby itself there are so many brilliant things about it.
Something that I have never taken too seriously was basing of miniatures.
This seems to be a whole other level and although mine are simple I know I want more from them.
Having seen some incredible bases over the few years I've been into gaming it has really made me think about this as quite an important part of the hobby itself.
So what inspires your bases and what are your favourite techniques?
For one I'm amazed by Crackle paint and I have enjoyed seeing the results for my lava-ish bases, there are much better examples out there but I like mine lol
